That Thing which we experienced in 1992 is here again, 20 years later…
…and with a vengeance!
Readin’, Ritin’ and ‘rithmetic are no longer the basic three Rs, at least not in the HVAC/R industry.
No, the three Rs are Recovery, Recycling and Reclamation.
And, it’s back!
Finding The Right Solution
What Has Changed?
On December 30, 2011 the EPA published a proposed rule for the management of HCFC-22 (R-22) Production and Consumption Allowances for 2012-2014. The proposed rule aims to decrease annual R-22 consumption allocations relative to the EPA’s December 2009 final rule.
The previous rule allocated 100M lbs. for 2011 and planned to step down the allocations to 90M lbs. in 2012. In its December 2011 proposed rule, EPA contemplates reducing the baseline for allowances to a level between 55M and 80M lbs., a significant reduction from the allocation rule that is in place today.
The EPA has indicated that a new final rule, which is expected to be issued later this year following a 30-day comment period and the EPA’s review and analysis of any comments received, will specify the exact reduction percentage relative to the 2009 Final Rule.
How Can SWH Supply Help?
- We have a wide range of non-ozone-depleting alternatives that are not subject to a phase-out. We are able and ready to offer our assistance to help you determine which of these alternatives will best meet your needs.
- We are in the process of implementing a Cylinder Swap Program – Where we buy your R22 and other refrigerants – in addition to the Reclamation Program we presently offer.
Hopfully these options will ease the transition away from R22.
